How much does it cost to ship a car?

Auto transport pricing looks arbitrary from the outside. It is not. Five factors account for almost all of it, and understanding them tells you whether a quote is real.

Car shipping cost is determined primarily by five factors: distance, vehicle size and weight, whether the vehicle ships on an open or enclosed carrier, route density between the pickup and delivery points, and the season. Price per mile decreases as total distance increases, so a long move costs less per mile than a short one. Enclosed transport typically costs significantly more than open transport, and rural origins or destinations cost more than major metro routes.

The five factors

What sets the price

Distance

The biggest single factor, but not linear. Price per mile falls as distance rises, so a 2,000 mile move does not cost four times a 500 mile move. Short moves are the least efficient per mile.

Vehicle size and weight

A carrier has finite deck space and a legal weight limit. A full-size truck or large SUV occupies the space of roughly one and a half sedans, and is priced that way.

Open or enclosed

Enclosed trailers carry fewer vehicles, there are far fewer of them, and demand is concentrated in high-value shipments. It costs meaningfully more.

Route density

Major metro to major metro is the cheapest thing in this industry because carriers run those lanes constantly. A rural pickup means a detour and possibly an empty run afterward.

Season and timing

Snowbird season moves Sun Belt pricing. Summer moves everything. Flexible dates cost less than a narrow window, because flexibility is what lets a carrier build an efficient load.

Condition and specifics

A non-running vehicle needs a winch-equipped carrier, a smaller pool, and costs more. Oversized, modified, or lowered vehicles have their own constraints.

The trap

Why the cheapest quote is usually the most expensive

Here is the mechanic that explains most bad auto transport experiences.

Many quotes are not prices. They are guesses at what a carrier will accept for the load. If the number is too low, no carrier takes it, and the vehicle sits on a load board. Days pass. Eventually someone calls you back and explains that they will need more money to get it moved.

By then your dates have gone, and you pay the higher number anyway because you have no leverage left.

A quote that is meaningfully below every other quote is not a bargain. It is a bid for your booking, not a price for your shipment. The question worth asking is not who is cheapest, but who is pricing against carriers actually running your lane.

Frequently asked

Why did three companies quote me three very different prices?

Usually because at least one of them is not quoting a price at all, but a number intended to win your booking. Prices that reflect what a carrier will actually accept on your lane cluster fairly closely. An outlier well below the rest is the one to question.

Is the quote binding?

A quote is an estimate based on your route, vehicle, and dates, and it is valid for 7 days. Your rate is confirmed in writing when you book. After that it changes only if the shipment details change, for example if the vehicle does not run or your locations or dates move. Our terms of service set this out in full.

Does an inoperable vehicle cost more?

Yes. It requires a carrier with a winch, which is a much smaller pool of equipment, and loading takes longer. Declare it at booking; discovering it at pickup means a failed dispatch and a reschedule.

Can I save money by being flexible on dates?

Yes, and it is the most reliable lever you control. Flexibility lets a carrier fit your vehicle into an efficient load rather than building a route around your window.

Is it cheaper to meet the truck somewhere?

Sometimes. If you are rural and willing to meet at a major highway junction or a metro area, it can reduce the cost, because the detour is what you were paying for.

Do businesses pay the same rates?

No. Businesses that ship regularly are priced by lane rather than per transaction, which is generally better than repeat retail pricing. That is one of the reasons to open an account rather than quoting one at a time.

Ready when you are

Two ways to start

Businesses that ship regularly get lane pricing and portal access. Everyone else can price a single vehicle in about a minute.

I ship for my business

Movers, dealers, RMCs, auctions, fleets. Contract pricing and the Clutch Transport Portal.

I am shipping my own vehicle
