Get the car to campus without losing a week to it

Driving it out, then flying home, then doing it in reverse in May. That is four travel days and two plane tickets for something that could be one line item.

Clutch Auto Transport ships vehicles to and from college campuses across all 48 continental states, for students and for the parents who usually arrange it. Because move-in and move-out weeks concentrate demand in mid-to-late August and in May, booking two to four weeks ahead of those windows is the difference between choosing your dates and taking what is left.

Two weeks of the year do most of the damage

Campus transport has the same problem as snowbird season: everybody needs it at once.

August is the crush. Move-in weeks across the country cluster into a narrow band in mid-to-late August, and carrier capacity into college towns is fully spoken for.

May is the reverse. Move-out compresses even harder, because finals schedules are tighter than move-in schedules.

College towns are not major metros. Many are genuinely rural, which means fewer carriers pass through and lanes cost more than the mileage alone suggests.

Book two to four weeks ahead of the move-in or move-out window and most of this stops being a problem.

What to know

Practical notes for parents

You can book it, they can receive it

A parent can arrange and pay for the shipment while the student receives the vehicle, as long as the student is 18 or older and named as the contact.

Dorm addresses are awkward

Campus streets are often restricted to large trucks. Plan on meeting the driver at a nearby lot rather than at the residence hall door.

Book ahead of move-in week

Two to four weeks out. Everyone in the country is doing this in the same fortnight.

Empty the car

It is tempting to load it with dorm supplies. Carriers cannot haul household goods, and items inside are generally not covered.

Questions

Frequently asked

Can my student receive the car if I am not there?

Yes, as long as they are 18 or older. Name them as the contact at booking. They will walk the vehicle with the driver and sign the condition report, so make sure they understand to actually look at it rather than signing immediately.

Can we ship things in the car to save on the dorm haul?

Generally no. Carriers are licensed to haul vehicles, not household goods, and personal items inside are typically not covered by cargo insurance. Some carriers allow a small amount in the trunk if agreed in advance, but it is not a substitute for shipping boxes.

Do you deliver to campus?

As close as the truck can safely and legally get. Many campuses restrict large vehicles, and a car hauler is around 75 feet long, so the practical answer is usually a nearby parking lot the driver arranges with your student.

How far ahead should we book for move-in week?

Two to four weeks. August move-in is one of the two busiest periods of the year for this lane type, and college towns often have thinner carrier coverage than the mileage would suggest.

Can we ship it back at the end of the year?

Yes, and May move-out compresses even harder than August move-in. If you know the return date, booking both directions ahead of time avoids the finals-week scramble.
